First Choice Reporting is pleased to announce a volunteer partnership with the Children's Center in Limuru, Kenya, which is about
an hour's drive from Nairobi.
About the Limuru Children's Center (LCC)
The Limuru Children's Center is a home in Limuru, Kenya that touches the lives of over 300 at-risk or needy children in the surrounding
villages. Currently there are 43 children living at the Center, aged 4-16. The Center also has two preschool programs for 70 children
in the villages. The pre-schools act as a way of preparing children for primary school, and also feeding them one good meal a day as
well as porridge in the morning.
There is also a secondary school, which currently supports 24 children. Another 200 plus children are touched through various
initiatives which encompass educational needs, medical needs and nutritional needs.
All of these children are brought to the Center by friends in the various villages and screened by a social worker who works at the
LCC. There are 17 staff members in the Center team. The LCC currently receives funding from Global Connections for the operational
costs of running the center.
About First Choice Reporting's charter with the Children's Center:
-
Direct volunteering at the LCC focused on the orphanage and the preschool. The volunteer’s role would include:
- Assisting the mothers with the daily chores
- Any practical work that needs to be done such as; renovations, maintenance, chopping wood, cleaning and cooking
-
Sponsor children's visit to one of the heritage sites in Kenya.
-
For example, a trip to the Maasai Mara. This would work in conjunction with an incentive scheme for the children; either
based on their educational performance or a campaign to give back to their own community.
-
Targeted programs that would provide nutritional meals and medicinal services on an ongoing basis:
- Food for the 45 children in orphanage and the preschool. Cost of sponsorship is $2,000 per month
-
For the extended LCC program that provides support to vulnerable children in the community; feeding and teaching
the 64 pre-school children plus 50 more primary school children. Cost of sponsorship is $800 per month.
- Money for the scholarship program. Cost of sponsorship is $25,000 per year.
-
New home expansion and furnishings for the home once it is built.
